Renovation and Extension of a Townhouse in El Escorial (Madrid)
Transforming a family home on a plot between two streets, open towards the landscape of the Sierra
Two streets at different levels and a plot opening towards the Sierra de Guadarrama shape the transformation of this townhouse in El Escorial.
The renovation extends the house vertically and uses the topography to distribute the programme across several levels. The main floor is entered from the upper street and contains the daytime areas, organised as a bright and open shared space. This level extends into an outdoor courtyard with a swimming pool, conceived as a contained urban garden.
The bedrooms occupy the floor below, separated from the communal activities, while the garage is positioned at the lowest level and has independent access from the second street.
The intervention improves natural light and continuity between rooms without completely erasing the history of the existing house. Original stonework is retained and combined with warm materials and new textures. The extension seeks to integrate into the urban fabric of El Escorial while creating a more flexible and comfortable home for contemporary family life.
