House in the medieval town of Pals
Construction of a dwelling that blends tradition and modernity
The project involves the construction of a single-family house on a corner plot between party walls, located in the historic core of the medieval village of Pals (Baix Empordà, Girona). Its corner condition gives the building a singular presence within the urban fabric, allowing the new architecture to operate as a transitional piece: an architectural prosthesis that extends the material continuity of the place.
The intervention is approached from a contemporary vernacular perspective, based on the use of local materials and traditional techniques, understanding tradition as accumulated knowledge rather than as an image to be reproduced. The house is conceived at a human scale, with a respectful attitude toward the existing built environment, seeking a natural and silent integration within the historic fabric.
The façade is conceived as a continuous mineral plane, resolved through a hand-applied mortar finish whose irregular texture absorbs light and records the passage of time. Openings are designed as deep perforations within the thickness of the wall, reinforcing the perception of mass and improving interior comfort through passive environmental control strategies.
The program is organized on two levels. The ground floor accommodates the shared living spaces, connected to a rear courtyard that regulates the microclimate of the house, while the upper floor concentrates the bedrooms. The staircase is naturally lit through a zenithal skylight, reinforcing the spatial continuity of the interior. The project thus proposes an architecture rooted in its context, where matter, light, and time establish a quiet dialogue with the built fabric.
