Refurbishment of an apartment in the Eixample district of Barcelona

The project focuses on the interior remodelling of a small apartment in a late 19th century building, located in a central enclave of Barcelona’s Eixample district.

Strategy of the functional space:

On a limited budget, the renovation must reorganise the rooms, optimising the lighting and ventilation from the street façade and the interior courtyard.

Following the renovation, the property now has an open-plan, diaphanous space for the living-dining-kitchen area and a master bedroom, both with access to the terrace, which is set back from the street, therefore providing a visual break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The interior courtyard provides light and ventilation to the bathroom and an additional bedroom. An entrance hall concludes the layout of the property.

Strategy as regards the completion:

A decision was made to uncover the vaulted ceilings with wooden beams, respecting their original structure and appearance.

As a result, the electrical wiring was installed in the ceilings using textile braided cable and porcelain insulators.

An important reinforcement beam takes centre stage, with hexagonal incisions that make it lighter and through its colour – the same as the existing exterior carpentry.

The incorporation of two tall wooden double doors and beautiful hexagonal hydraulic tiles – both of which have been restored – blend harmoniously with the vaulted ceilings to take on a final appearance that is very similar to what the original apartment would have looked like.
